Un entomologo non può socializzare con gli insetti. Un professore di economia e business non solo può, ma deve in qualche modo socializzare con l’oggetto del suo studio: business people. Per questo non è facile immaginare che un entomologo sia “catturato” dall’interesse degli insetti, mentre è più facile che un professore di business, economia o finanza, sia catturato dagli interessi delle persone che operano nel campo di studio. Lo stesso rischio che ha un professore di ingegneria nucleare di essere catturato dalla lobby del nucleare.
Tanto per l’ingegnere quanto per l’economista la soluzione non sta in rigide norme di separazione, che ridurrebbero i professori a degli astratti teorici senza legame con la realtà. Ma non si può neppure ignorare il rischio che questa socializzazione comporta. Per questo ho scritto “Preventing Economists’ Capture“, presentato questa settimana a EconTalk , con Russ Roberts.

An entomologist cannot socialize with bugs. A business professor not only can, but also have to socialize with the object of his study: business people. Thus, while it is not easy to imagine that an entomologist is “captured” by the interest of bugs, it is easier for a professor of business, economics or finance, to be captured by the interests of the people working in the subjects studied. It is the same risk that a professor of nuclear engineering is captured by the nuclear lobby.
As for the engineer so for the economist the solution is not in a rigid separation, which would reduce the professors to abstract theorist with no connection to reality.
